At the always gorgeous and welcoming Catalyst International Film Festival this April, I was delighted to be the moderator for a lively panel discussion on the role of film critics. With an ensemble of esteemed reviewers, we had an introspective chat, exploring what it means to critique as well as what influence reviews have on the industry.
The panel discussion was held in the cosy Beltable cafe, where we were joined by esteemed academic Ruth Barton. Roe McDermott (Hotpress) armed with sharp words and pop culture acumen, Mohamed Tarek(El Gouna Film Festival Programmer), representing the Egyptian Film Critics Association, and last but not least, my sometimes Arena co-critic Chris Wasser (Sunday Independent & Irish Examiner).
As the discussion commenced, the panelists delved into the heart of the matter, attempting to tackle the question “Are film critics drawn from too small a pool?”
