A Memorable Adventure at the Cannes Film Festival: Rain, Sun, and Lost Luggage

Last month, I had the opportunity to attend the infamous Cannes Film Festival for the first time, supporting the great – and very full on – work of WFT Chair and incoming WIFT International President, Dr. Susan Liddy. From rushing through the rain to basking in the sun mingling with some impressive individuals, the experience was intense to say the least.

The Cannes Film Festival is best known for its glamorous red carpet events and star-studded gatherings. However, to instill a sense of home, the heavens opened upon our arrival. This meant it was rather difficult to maintain the air of effortless Riveara-chic. While rain didn’t dampen our spirits – just our socks, notes, bag and laptop –  Aer Lingus decided to play a game of hide-and-seek with our luggage. This meant a very important book was MIA ahead of its launch.

With a considerable amount of determination, perseverance, and a pair of comfortable runners earning their keep, we trapsed from panels, to events, to meetings to one final and very impressive lunch hosted by the lovely women at the Writers’ Lab. We must have covered so much ground that even the Pretenders would have been impressed.

Dr. Susan Liddy’s Women, Ageing and the Screen Industries: Falling off a Cliff? made a timely appearance in a welcome room filled with Women in Film and TV Members from across the globe.

And it was with a bag full of loose cards, a to-do list longer than Susan’s book, and a camera roll full of multiple pictures of cheese (that one was just mine), we checked into our flight home.  The Cannes Film Festival is not just an opportunity to mingle with like-minded individuals; it’s also a platform for potential collaborations! Stay tuned as we keep you posted on some latest developments.
